Time lapse Oil painting – classical figure painting

First, I realize an impramatura on my transfered drawing. Then, I lift off the lights with a rag and an eraser. I paint my background as a first value reference. I lay down my underpainting slowly starting with the darkest colors. I compare all surrounding colors to the darkest and “tile” carefully. This early, I rely on my value and color study (you can see it on the left) At this stage, I focus mainly on values, but I try to get the chroma and hue right whenever I can. I work slowly all the way down. I build a solid and opaque layer. I alternate between hog bristle and sable brush depending of the desired softness. Remember, this stage is the underpainting, or “first painting”, There will be time to correct and refine later. Now I start my overpainting (or “second painting”). I use glazes to correct the transitions and improve edge quality. I also correct the hue and chroma if needed. To bring out the lights, I use a technique called scumbling. I apply opaque light colors over a darker underlayer. Remember : shadows can be transparent but lights have to be opaque and solid. Now, I start another layer of glazes : it’s my “third painting” I refine even more until I get the desired effect. “Fourth painting”, still more refining to do. I go over the painting again, looking for final details to correct.

    I have a big problem.
    When I try to cover up large areas with oil paint like for example a dark/black background I thin down the oil paint with reefined linseed oil and even if I use just a little bit of linseed oil I lose the control of the paint, because the opacity is gone and I can't build up layers on the paint, because the paint becomes very thin and too wet to build up on.

    I always have to wait until the first layer ist dry to put on several more layers until I reach the right opacity.

    How can I solve this problem, where's my mistake?
    How do you cover up large areas with paint, are you putting several layers on ?
    Is there any dryingtime between?

    I hope you can help me.

  3. Hi Florent, I have a question. I see you have a reference on your lcd monitor as well. I recently switched from printouts to tablet for reference, but I found I have a lot of trouble color matching this way, because of the retro illumination of the monitor when I put the palette knife close to it.  Do you have any suggestions? Also, when painting with natural daylight, do you lower the luminosity of the monitor accordingly? Thank you.

  10. Hi. Nice work. I have a question: If you scumble in your second painting (overpainting) , how do you keep your lights so opaque that you can scumble?
    Wouldn´t the amount of medium (linseed oil) make the paint so thin and transparent that you cannot really scumble anymore ?
    Or do you use so little medium that the paint actually stays almost the same consistency?

  15. Thank you for your work on youtube. You are a very good teacher, have you considered teaching? Your video on blending is fantastic. Yes I got to the same conclusion, the more you work, the more chances you have to kill a painting. This way of adding more paint, instead of blending between values is new for me. I will give it a try and I will let you know. With this video though, there is a problem. This is just my personal opinion, don't take it personally. I think the way the model is photographed is wrong. The contrast is too high, there is also a very dark shadow on the edge of one of the legs, which makes the leg look flat. Towards the edges you shouldn't paint very dark or very light values, or you will loose the form. On the spine as well, it shouldn't be so dark, it looks almost like a hole there, which it isn't. How about if you look at the same model from life, but with a different light? How do those values look? I hope I gave you something to think, and I didn't upset you. I personally look at the work of Robert Hannaford, he is a great realist painter. Keep up with the good work!
